I couldn’t resist sharing photos from one of my favorite days in Lapland, Finland. Our last stop of the trip was a small town called Kuusamo, which is nearbyΒ Oulanka National Park. It’s a beautiful area that is completely transformed into a winter wonderland this time of year!
Lately our travels have been more focused on cities and architecture, so there was something incredibly refreshing about spending our last day in Finland exploring the beautiful landscapes and picturesque views of Lapland. Jacob and I spent the entire day in this park, exploring different paths, bridges, areas and more. I’ve never seen so much snow in my life! The best part: some hiking paths were so covered we could even slide down them instead of walk. It really made us feel like kids again!
Here is a Google maps view of our walking route in Oulanka National Park.Β This map includes where we parked toΒ hike the Pieni Karhunkierros trail, and I marked the bridges and cabins pictured above! If you need more inspiration to visit, check out our Lapland, Finland video which features even more landscapes from this beautiful place.
Finally, if you’re planning a trip to Finland, don’t miss ourΒ Complete Lapland, Finland Travel Guide!

Great photos. We have booked for late December near Oulanka and will definitely do this trail. May I ask 2 questions? Did you need snowshoes and how much light was there? Could you see in the twilight easily?
Selena Says
Post authorHi David – we didn’t need snowshoes, just waterproof hiking boots. When we were there in December the sun was rising around 10am and setting around 2pm. There’s some visibility after the sun goes down, but definitely plan ahead so you aren’t navigating your way back in the dark!

Hi Selena,
This post took me to a winter wonder land.. I am planning Lapland this winters. The map you have put for the national park is too handy and helpful. can you please tell me how long did it took to complete this route and how many miles it is π
Thanks
Selena Says
Post authorHi Trisha! It took us approximately 2 hours to hike. It’s roughly 5 km if you go to the farthest point on the map, and only 3 kilometers if you stop near the cabin on the river. Hope that helps!

Wow, I am going to Lapland in March and those pictures were such an inspiration!
I have a question though, did you explore the National Park by yourselves or did you have a guide?
In case you did it on your own, how did you proceed? Park the car somewhere and started exploring or did you have some references?
Hope to hear from you soon π
Selena Says
Post authorHi Lara – great question! We explored ourselves via the Pieni Karhunkierros trail. I created a map with the bridges & cabins marked so you can reference it. Also added it to the bottom of the post as well. π
