I travel to the Greek Islands every summer, and that hasn’t changed since I had my son a few years back. Planning a trip to Greece with kids is one of the best decisions you can make as a family, because the Greeks are incredibly hospitable towards children. It’s not uncommon for locals to entertain my toddler when we’re exploring a village or to offer him a toy when we’re visiting a shop. We’ve also never been turned away from a restaurant, no matter how nice the menu or atmosphere is. Meal time is a big part of Greek culture, and it’s always a family affair.

My son has been fortunate enough to travel with us to Paros, Mykonos, Sifnos, Serifos, Tinos, Andros and Antiparos; this summer we plan to take him to four additional Greek Islands as well as Athens. If you’re searching for the best Greek Islands for families, a quick search will typically turn up Crete: while this large island is certainly child-friendly, the smaller islands are just as welcoming for Greece family holidays. I much prefer to make the journey to the less obvious islands each year. This list includes the best family-friendly islands in Greece that deliver the perfect combination of relaxing beaches, low-key boutique hotels, authentic culture, and engaging things to do in Greece that the whole family will love.

When To Choose Crete Instead of Smaller Islands

As I mentioned, Crete is the largest Greek island and has long been a go-to for Greece family holidays. If you’re traveling with a bigger group or want resort-style amenities, it can still be a great option. Choose Crete if you’re after all-inclusive resorts or if you want a direct flight to an island with lots to do. And if you’re after authenticity, make sure to visit smaller villages like Archanes or explore southern Crete for a more local experience.

Where to Stay: Family-Friendly Hotels in Crete

Elafonisi Villas – $$$$ – a secluded luxury hideaway near the famous pink-sand beach with dramatic clifftop locations and private infinity pools. You’ll find untouched western Crete wilderness here, and that ultimate sense of exclusive isolation. Note: book far in advance.

Domes Zeen Chania – $$$$ – a sophisticated beachfront luxury hotel just outside historic Chania with award-winning design and tropical gardens. Featuring contemporary suites with private pools, Michelin-starred dining, and that perfect blend of family-friendly amenities with “couples-only” elegance.

From wide sandy beaches perfect for sandcastles, to family-style meals at outdoor tavernas, to exploring seaside caves by boat Greece is one of the most enjoyable vacations for families. And parents can just as easily sit back with a glass of Assyrtiko and watch the sunset while the little ones splash in the waves. Whether you’re after a fast-paced, activity-filled adventure or a laid-back recharge in the sun, the Greek Islands have something for everyone.
