The food scene in Kauai is delightful and varied: think casual side-of-the-road lunch stops, fresh Hawaiian poké, and curated menus with locally sourced ingredients. For me it’s almost nostalgic (we spend every winter in Kauai, and I rarely add new spots to my go-to list), as the island feels stuck in time in the best way possible, with many local restaurants and chef-designed menus maintaining the same quality year after year. Kauai definitely leans into a healthy, local scene, but it also doesn’t disappoint on indulgent meals and hearty dishes (Hawaiian plate lunches and slow-simmered ramen bowls are a must when visiting). Here are all my favorite places to eat on the North Shore of Kauai, where I always base myself.
Lunch + Casual Bites
For beach days and between activities – no reservations needed.
Sushi Girl (Kilauea) – A North Shore staple where the poké is so fresh they close shop when they run out of fish. The ahi action bowl is always worth the drive.
Kauai Juice Co (Kilauea) – Homemade kombucha, healthy salads and bowls, and delicious pastries make this a regular stop for me. I always order their iced matcha made with fresh coconut milk.
Dolphin Fish Market (Hanalei) – My go-to for grab-and-go sushi rolls and poké—the snow crab roll is my personal favorite. Park in the back and enter through their takeaway market. They also have a sit-down restaurant open for dinner with a much more extensive menu.

Hanalei Poké (Hanalei) – My reliable go-to for fresh poké right in downtown Hanalei, perfect for a quick lunch before hitting the beach. Located behind the main shops.
Food Trucks (Hanalei) – Two of my North Shore favorites: Fresh Bite for tasty salads and sandwiches, and Holey Grail for their incredible homemade taro donuts.
Mermaids (Kapa’a) – Delicious poké wraps and salads served fast and fresh. We always stop here when we visit Kapa’a: it’s the perfect quick, satisfying meal.
Pono Market (Kapa’a) – Also a must when in Kapa’a: this no-frills local spot for authentic pork lau lau and Kauaian specialties. Go early, they often sell out during lunchtime.
Dinner Spots
Evening meals and spots to linger for atmosphere and tasty food.
AMA Restaurant (Hanalei) – This tasty ramen spot is one of the best North Shore restaurants for couples and families alike, and it also features a great cocktail menu. The fire pits and grassy area outside are perfect for kids who need to run around (request a table on the grass if yours don’t sit still for long).
Ama Restaurant, a great dinner spot for couples and families.
Bar Acuda (Hanalei) – Delicious tapas featuring everything from fresh-caught fish to lamb chops to seasonal greens. This is my splurge spot for date night. Reservations are notoriously hard to come by, so plan well in advance.
Welina Terrace at 1Hotel (Princeville) – Delicious cocktails and a small sushi menu, but the sweeping bay views are the real draw here. Make a reservation in advance, and request a table up front for the best vistas.

Food Trucks (Kilauea) – one of our favorite options for a casual dinner with live music is the Kilauea food trucks, typically Thursday-Saturday behind the mini golf course. I always opt for the Venezuelan food truck, Ally’s Cocina (plenty of gluten free options), and the pizza truck, Silver Cloud Eatery, is a crowd-pleaser.
Aina Kauai Restaurant (Kapa’a) – While I haven’t been lucky enough to dine here yet, this sushi restaurant has an omakase experience I’ve heard great things about. It’s at the top of my list for our next visit, so I included it anyway (let me know if you make it here, I’d love to hear your review!).

Coffee + Breakfast
Morning stops, bakeries, and side-of-the-road trucks for those slow start mornings.
The Haven (near Hanalei) – A newer coffee stop serving some of the best third-wave coffee on the island. This is where I go when I want a really good cup.
Hanalei Bread Co (Hanalei) – Always a busy spot for breakfast and coffee. While I love their breakfast sandwich and homemade breads (they make a delicious gluten-free loaf), their coffee isn’t my favorite, so I often pop next door to the coffee bar at Hanalei Market for my morning fix.
Wishing Well Coffee & Tea (Hanalei) – I love the relaxed, trendy atmosphere of this coffee spot that also serves up delicious smoothies and acai bowls. Bonus: they usually have tonka trucks out front for kids to play with, something that keeps my toddler occupied for as long as I can drink my coffee.
Nanea Coffee Truck (Kilauea) – You’ll find some of the best coffee on the island at this aesthetic blue truck in the jungle, just off the main road. Pop over to Aloha Ola Farmstand next door afterwards for a frosty or smoothie fix!

Treats + Sweet Stops
Think Hawaiian shave ice, desserts, and afternoon pick-me-ups.
Pink’s (Hanalei) – Local ice cream with my go-to being the homemade banana mac nut flavor. It’s rich, creamy, and distinctly Hawaiian.
Aloha Juice Bar (Hanalei) – A quick, delicious fix for fresh fruit smoothies when you’re on the go.
Wishing Well Shave Ice (Hanalei) – My favorite shave ice spot on the island. You can’t go wrong with any of their specials, and the texture is perfectly light and fluffy.

Aloha Ola Farmstand (Kilauea) – Go specifically for the pineapple frosties (pure frozen fruit ice cream) made with pure sugarloaf pineapple, which is the sweetest variety you’ll ever taste.

Have you visited Āina Kauai Restaurant yet? I would not call it a sushi restaurant. The chef prepares a special menu each night appropriate to the season and using local ingredients . If you arrive early, you can get to sit at the bar and watch the food being assembled. To our taste, this is the best restaurant on the island and we visit at least once each time we are there.

My husband and I have made Lihui, Kaua’i our 3 month getaway from Arizona heat for over 30 years. Since he passed 4 years ago I’ve rotated 1-2 months on different portions of the island. I found your article because I will be going in December this year. Wonderful with familiar places and many that I had not heard of! Looking forward to fresh eyes on north shore!
