Words can’t describe how happy I am to finally get to share these photos. Though we were only engaged for a year and half, our lives changed so much in the time between our engagement and our Kauai wedding day.
Jacob proposed to me in Kauai in March, just one day after we left Los Angeles to start traveling and to move abroad. He completely surprised me! He told me afterward that he initially planned the proposal for Santorini, but couldn’t wait until then to pop the question (we were planning to road trip on our arrival to Europe, so it would be another few weeks before we made it to Greece).
I’m so glad he didn’t wait, because Kauai is such a special place for us. We ended up getting married a few feet from where he proposed! Our time in Santorini ended up being just as memorable because we arranged to have our engagement photos taken there while we were on the road.
Jacob and I decided to do a ‘first look’ before we walked down the aisle. I was so anxious for everything to start in the days leading up to the wedding, mostly just running through all the bits and pieces to make sure things were going to run smoothly. The moment I saw him, all the nervousness I was feeling just went away. It’s so special getting to share this moment with one another ahead of the ceremony. The first few photos below were taken in the exact spot where Jacob proposed to me.
When we were planning our wedding it became pretty clear to us that we had to incorporate ‘travel’ in some way. In the time between our engagement and our wedding day, we traveled to 21 countries together and started a new chapter of our lives in Amsterdam. It’s so crazy to me how much we’ve grown and changed in this time, and that we somehow became ‘those people that travel’.
To commemorate some of our favorite places we’ve traveled to together, tables were labeled by destination. Each one had a few sentences describing why it left an impression on us. Guests found their way to their seats with a map. Lots of the details around the reception area related back to travel — like the vintage suitcases below, as well as the globe, among other things.
Like every wedding, there are always unexpected elements that are uncontrollable. For instance, we planned to include seating on the beach nearby, but it was so windy the morning of our wedding day that we couldn’t put out any tables or chairs.
My advice to anyone planning their wedding would be to make a list of the top 5 things that are important to you, no matter how silly they are. For instance, I really wanted to get photos of Jacob and I in front of our arch and overlooking the river above. Even though we got caught up talking to everyone after the ceremony, we still slipped away to get those photos. If something matters to you, absolutely make sure you make time for it! Otherwise, the day will fly by before you know it.
I can’t help feeling so fortunate when I look back at these photos. It was amazing having all of our friends and family in one place for a whole weekend. It was a truly unforgettable day and just the beginning of another adventure.
