Deck of our overwater bungalow at Four Seasons Resort Bora BoraIt was so fun reliving the memories of our honeymoon in Tahiti while getting these photos together! I’ve been trying to sit and compile them for awhile now, and other projects just kept getting in the way. But, with our one year anniversary just around the corner, it was time.

We split our Tahitian honeymoon week between two different locations: Bora Bora and Vahine Island. After our wedding in Kauai, we first went to Oahu before jumping on a plane to Tahiti. I’ll never forget how excited I was as soon as we flew over Bora Bora. I’ve seen so many photos over the years and it’s a whole different experience finally seeing it in person. I get why people are obsessed — it doesn’t seem like a real place!

The reason we decided to split our time was because we wanted to splurge at the Four Seasons Bora Bora for the full overwater bungalow experience. After doing some additional research, Vahine Island seemed like a quiet and welcoming paradise. There is only one property on the island and its completely family-run.

Swimming with sharks seemed freaky at first, but as soon as I saw how indifferent they are to people, I went right in. The water is the most beautiful blue here, I couldn’t get over how surreal it was! It’s also such a stark contrast to the second spot we visited to swim with sting rays, which was the palest turquoise color.

My absolute favorite part of our honeymoon was jumping into the ocean from our bungalow every night. Usually these evening swims would be right before going to dinner, but sometimes we went for a swim before and after. The sunset from our balcony was incredible, so it was impossible not to spend sunset hour there. When we originally arrived to the Four Seasons on our first day we weren’t facing the main island, but the hotel was nice enough to switch us from the second night onward. So worth it — I highly recommend requesting a room facing the mountains for the best sunset views!

After four days in Bora Bora, we flew to the island of Raiatea to take a small boat to Vahine Island. As soon as we arrived I knew we had made the right call to split our time here. The accommodation is more rustic, but the island is so peaceful. There are kayaks you can take out to a small island nearby, chairs in the sun, and coconut palms all around. The resort is run by one couple, and the husband (also a chef!) made some of the most amazing dishes we’d ever had. Every morning he’d show us a menu for the evening and we could make any special requests we wanted, but honestly, never did! All of it was local fish, delicious seasonings and homemade desserts…my mouth is watering just thinking about it!

All the photos below are from Vahine Island. We definitely got a bit lazier with taking photos here! For our honeymoon, we agreed that it would be impossible not to bring our camera along, but we really didn’t want to be going through photos. So instead of reviewing them or backing photos up to our laptops, we waited until the trip was over. We also turned our phones off. It was so worth it, because it forced us to be in the moment.

If you’re looking for the ultimate luxurious experience in Tahiti, the Four Seasons Bora Bora is unmatched. An aspect we didn’t even think about until we moved islands was how diligent they are at making the experience as comfortable as possible. They spray for mosquitos (we didn’t see any!), maintain the beaches (there are loads of sea cucumbers in Tahiti, which can make it difficult to swim), and arrange just about anything you need.

That being said, I’m so glad we got to experience more than just the ‘typical’ experience in Tahiti. Venturing out to a more unknown island made our escape feel as if it were completely our own. Hopefully we’ll be back one day…
